The Red Hook Container Terminal is run by the company Red Hook Terminals for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. The Port Authority acquired the port in the 1950s, a time when goods were shipped not in standardized truck-size boxes but as "break bulk cargo." In the 1980s the site was rebuilt as a container terminal, complete with large gantry cranes and large areas to stack long metal shipping containers.
