Columbia Street & Verona Street, 1938
Columbia Street, west side, north of Verona Street. At the left is seen the American Can Co. on Dwight Street, between Delevan and Verona Streets.
Also note sign in background reading "Hardwood Lumber".
The structure for the American Can Company is still in existence. The shanty in the foreground is long gone. We don't know when it was replaced.
In the 1970's affordable housing was built on the site, one of three sites in Red Hook, an accomplishment of Red Hook activist Nancy Kearse Gooding.
From the website of the Carroll Gardens Association: "Carroll Gardens Association, Inc. acquired 62 units of affordable housing in Red Hook from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) in 2002. Red Hook Gardens consists of 31 two-family townhouses, located in four noncontiguous but close sites: Dwight Street, Verona Street, Visitation Place, and Coffey Street."
As of 2023, there are plans to replace all the buildings with newer, taller affordable housing that will be raised to be flood resilient.
