Night Heron
Night herons live around the Red Hook shoreline. PortSide staff have seen them in Erie Basin (this photo is in the O'Connell's marina), Atlantic Basin, and the Red Hook Container Terminal. As their name implies, they usually fish at night, and are rather private, all of which makes it so unusual to see the daytime feeding (begging really) by this juvenile night heron. The night heron is most readily found at night by it's low "wok" croak, which sounds a bit ghoulish and can be frightening if you don't know what's making it.
