Map showing the original high and low grounds, salt marsh and shore lines in the city of Brooklyn: from original government surveys made in 1776-7. Published for the Board of Health, 1876

This 1876 map, a copy of which is in the collection of the Brooklyn Historical Society, is designed to show Brooklyn's shoreline at the time and the salt marshes and shoreline of 100 years prior, before it was built up, filled in drained and altered.   As is the case with several other maps in RedHookWaterStories, one should note that Brooklyn Basin was planned but never built.

The blue of the map indicates the original shoreline and the green areas that were low grounds and salt marshes.  Areas that are built up shoreline or were once salt marshes are still prone to flooding.
