Summit Academy Charter School

PortSide frequently programs with this charter school that is in the same building as PS 676 elementary school. The building formerly housed PS 27, and old-timers still refer to the building that way.

Summit Academy Charter School is a college- preparatory school. Their foundational goal is to tackle the staggering low college attendance and graduation rates in Red Hook where less than 45% of adults graduate high school and less than 4% have attended college. Summit Academy provides the fundamental and supplemental resources which enables a shift from the predetermined confines of their statistically disadvantaged communities.

Summit reached national visibility after being featured on the Ellen Show in 2016.

School's statement:

Summit Academy Charter School bridges the gap between aspirations and realities by preparing 6th through 12th grade scholars to gain acceptance to, excel in and graduate from college.

We develop academic excellence, instill character, and cultivate leadership. Our academic program and college preparatory curriculum are structured to accomplish two goals: (1) student acquisition and mastery of basic literacy, numeracy, and writing skills and (2) student application of basic skills to synthesize, analyze, apply, and make inferences about content that is more challenging and complex.
