The construction of Atlantic Docks in the late 1840's jumpstarted the development of Red Hook. The facility was so innovative, large and such an inspiration that the Brooklyn Daily Eagle newspaper said that Atlantic Dock meant that Brooklyn might have a commercial future. At the time, Brooklyn was largely farms save for the tight cluster of buildings at Brooklyn Heights.
