Red Hook Flood Prep Flyer by Saba Mahmood, 2024

Saba Mahmood's short flyer (pdf)  is designed to guide residents of Red Hook (and others) in understanding their state of readiness in case of a flood. It is in English, Spanish, and Chinese, the main languages of the Red Hook neighborhood.

Saba Mahmood is an Architect. Born and raised in Pakistan, where floods have been devastating in recent years, and through her experience in community engagement, she believes that the ones who undergo crises are best at deriving solutions for themselves. Saba is passionate about working with communities to help build resilience against adverse impacts of climate change through their knowledge and experiences.

At the time she created this flyer, Mahmood was pursuing her master’s degree in the Urban and Community Planning program at Pratt Institute as a Fulbright scholar. She graduated Pratt Spring 2024 and is returning to Pakistan.

This flood preparation brochure was developed by gleaning knowledge from interviews with Red Hook community members who suffered from Superstorm Sandy and conferring with PortSide.  Our aim is to ensure that Red Hook is prepared for extreme events and is able to bounce forward from it.
