Docks and Dogs: audio history of Red Hook’s working waterfront and the Brooklyn Marine Terminal process: 2024
A tour given by Portside's Carolina Salguero, aboard the sloop Clearwater in the Buttermilk Channel waters off of Red Hook, September 27, 2024
Carolina Salguero, PortSide’s Executive Director, narrated a tour covering the history of Red Hook’s working waterfront (docks) and the Brooklyn Marine Terminal process during a free public sail we offered as part of our visiting vessel program. We sailed on the historic ship Clearwater, Friday, September 27, 2024. Hotdogs and more conversation followed the sail aboard the Mary A. Whalen. This gave the event its name: “Docks n Dogs on the Red Hook Waterfront.”
Here's Carolina’s tour. The recording, unfortunately, starts a few minutes into the talk.
The NYC Economic Development Corporation (EDC) took charge of all the waterfront port property from Atlantic Avenue to Red Hook’s Wolcott Street from the Port Authority, on June 11, 2024 and has launched a planning process and are talking about adding housing and parks while also modernizing the port and making a key part of a new marine highway to move freight locally and take trucks off the road. Other proposed improvements include creating a cold storage warehouse, adding an electric gantry crane, demolition of Piers 9A and 9B to make a new marginal pier, plus basic upgrades.
