New Steam Pilotboat ties up at Atlantic Docks, 1897

In  June of  1897 the newly built  Pilotboat  NEW YORK,  tied up at the Atlantic Docks to prepare for its first day of service.   The steel vessel was built at Harlan and Wolf’s yards at Wilmington.   Her compound engines supply 800 horse-power.   A dynamo provides electricity for light.   The boat has a double mission: to deliver pilots to incoming vessels and to aid vessels in destress.
