The New York and Puerto Rico steamship company's ships traveled between San Juan, Puerto Rico and Pier 35, Atlantic Basin in Red Hook.
The SS COAMO, SS BRAZOS, and SS CAROLINA were all ships that took vacationers to Puerto Rico, but their lasting effect was from transporting migrating Puerto Ricans to Red Hook Brooklyn, where they established a vibrant community near where the ships docked in Atlantic Basin.
The SS CAROLINA was sunk during WWI by a German U-boat but the ship was immortalized in song.
